Summary of Position

The CCW Vice-President of Programming, is part of the team who provide leadership and guidance to the board and the local Cornell community. In addition, the Program Vice-President is responsible for creating interesting opportunities for events and activities that align with Cornell University priorities to engage alumni, parents and friends. Evaluating additional opportunities such as All-Ivy events, outside networking and Cornell-centric is helpful to keep the schedule of events lively and interesting. Signature events help the club make a name and create a special Cornell connection while one-off opportunities create a sense of inclusion without long-term commitments.

Speak to Groups
It is important that the club programming chair is able to speak in board meetings and share ideas, suggestions and plans with the board, while creating a sense of excitement and interest through provoking ideas and plans. Although public speaking is not mandatory, it is helpful to have a comfort level in speaking to their constituents. The ability to share a clear message is important in both speaking and communicating via email. This position requires the ability to communicate clearly in spoken and written correspondence and in virtual and in-person meetings. This includes the ability to make introductions to events hosted by guest speakers.

Club programming chairs should effectively lead the board in carrying out plans for events. Working closely with the affinity chair to form a programming committee, if there is one, is helpful. Delegating tasks to the board and encouraging them to participate in various aspects of each event is important. Communication with the president and treasurer and sharing timely information on payments and contracts is crucial. It is also necessary to actively participate in the life of the club. This position requires the ability to lead the Programming Committee members and others in executing events. Club programming chairs should actively participate in succession planning and board opportunity discussions within their community. It is helpful to seek out members of the local community to participate and interact on another level. Actively engaging alumni, parents and friends to participate in all aspects of events could help encourage additional participation. Meeting alumni and speaking with them about opportunities to engage the local Cornell community are vital to the growth of the club. This position should actively participate in succession planning as well as encouraging other board opportunities. Prerequisites Summary of Position The CCW Vice-President of Programming is responsible for overseeing the planning, creation, and execution of compelling events and activities (either virtual or in-person) that will engage Cornell alumni located in the greater Washington, DC metro area. (Events: https://cornellclubdc.org/events) Subject and venue diversity (DC, MD, VA) as well as alumni diversity/equity/inclusion are actively encouraged. Each CCW event for which admission is charged should be coordinated with the CCW Treasurer to ensure that the registration fees cover the cost of the event plus the CCW credit card processing fees, as CCW events are not expected to result in a loss, unless so approved in advance by the board. This position includes maintaining and updating the Programming Calendar on the CCW website by creating individual listings for each new Calendar item and sending out email announcements of these individual listings to CCW Members and other local Cornellians. This position also coordinates with other local Cornell alumni groups and with Cornell Alumni Affairs & Development (AAD) to encourage the inclusion of other Washington DC area Cornell-related events on the Calendar. In addition, this position coordinates with the CCW Vice-President of Communications to ensure that the CCW Newsletter and CCW social media pages are updated accordingly from the Calendar. This position provides Programming reports during the monthly CCW board meetings, chairs the Programming Committee meetings afterward, and provides quarterly event attendance updates to AAD.

Other Meeting Details: Board meetings are held monthly at the Cornell in Washington building.

Additional Attendance Requirements: Executive Committee meetings are held monthly by conference call. Program Committee meetings are held monthly before board meetings. Program Vice Presidents are invited to attend CALC and are encouraged to attend any other additional training opportunities available to them.
