Who we are

Our Vision
CLAA’s vision is to be one of the most active and impactful alumni associations in the United States and beyond, representing and advocating for the Latina/o/x population at Cornell.

Our Mission
Our mission is to cultivate, engage, and inspire Latina/o/x Cornell students and alumni to achieve personal and professional excellence and be the leaders of today and tomorrow. All are welcome.

More about CLAA
CLAA works to engage Latino/a/x students and alumni by creating a space for community reflection and the sharing of ideas through both in-person and virtual events. We offer opportunities to deeply engage in conversations and strategic planning around current events and issues that impact the Cornell Latino/a/x community, led by experts in their fields.

Our events are filled with passion, purpose, and a bit of parranda to expand fellowship and community among Cornell Latino/a/x students and alumni.

We represent our constituency:
* By assisting Cornell in the academic and personal development of Latino students, faculty, and staff;
* By advocating for formulation of Cornell policy; and
* By advocating for Latino/a/x issues in the Cornell community.

We cultivate and engage our constituency:
* By sponsoring career networking events;
* By providing information on scholarships available to Cornell Latino/a/x students;
* By organizing fundraising campaigns to support the LSSO/LSP Emergency Fund, the Latino Living Center, and such other needs as they arise amongst our constituency; and
* By arranging mentorship opportunities with seasoned alumni.

We will inspire our constituency:
* By fostering a sentiment of regard and support amongst Cornell Latino alumni;
* By facilitating communication between Cornell, CLAA, and other Cornell alumni associations;
* By promoting Latino alumni volunteerism to Cornell and local communities; and
* By driving the growth of CLAA membership in various regions throughout the nation.

Founded in 1994, The Cornell Latino Alumni Association (CLAA) and its constituency is broad and diverse, encompassing Cornell University’s Latino/a/x American, Latin Caribbean, Latin American, and Latin European alumni, which collectively comprise about 15% of Cornell’s total alumni population.

Cornell’s connection to Latin America can be traced back to its first classes which included students from Brazil. In fact, there were enough Brazilian students throughout the nineteenth century at Cornell to support a Portuguese-language magazine, Aurora Brasileira. Today, Latin Americans are active in most of Cornell’s colleges and schools and throughout alumni associations with diverse strengths including agricultural sciences, anthropology, art history, city and regional planning, government, history, labor relations, languages, literature, and nutrition.

Membership in CLAA is open to all Cornell University alumni holding undergraduate or post graduate degrees from Cornell, and Cornell faculty and staff members who support the purposes and goals of CLAA.
